Vlora Airport Not Opening for Summer 2026
Vlora International Airport will not open for summer 2026 — certification is still pending and charters are cancelled. Tirana stays the only gateway.
If you were counting on flying straight into the south coast this summer, change the plan: Vlora International Airport (VIA) will not open for the 2026 season, and the charter flights pencilled in for it have been cancelled. Tirana International Airport (TIA) remains the only operating airport in Albania, so a road transfer to the Riviera is still part of the journey.
What happened
According to Albanian Daily News (11 April 2026), the airport’s launch has been put off because it has not yet obtained certification to enter operation. The infrastructure is reported as built, but the regulatory steps required to fly passengers are not complete — and without them the airport simply cannot open.
The knock-on effect is the cancellation of charter flights that had been planned for Vlora, including services from Nordic markets. Travel-trade sources quoted in the report had targeted a summer launch, then a later date, but both proved unworkable for the 2026 season.
What it means for your trip
In practice you’ll fly into Tirana (TIA) and continue overland to Vlora and the southern beaches. The drive from Tirana down to the Vlora area is roughly 2.5–3 hours depending on route and traffic (treat that as approximate and check live timings before you set off). If your accommodation quoted a Vlora-airport pickup, contact them now to rearrange a Tirana transfer instead.
This mainly affects travellers who’d booked charter packages assuming a Vlora landing. Independent travellers are less exposed, but the same logistics apply: budget the transfer time, and decide whether you want your own wheels. Our guide to renting a car in Albania covers the trade-offs, and the transport overview lays out buses and furgons for the coast.
Plan around it
With Tirana as your entry point, it’s worth a night or two in the capital before heading south — see our guide to Albanian cities and the note on the best time to visit for timing the coast. Sort the paperwork early via our Albania visa guide, and use the trip-planning hub for the rest.
