Tirana Marathon 2026: Race-Day Guide for Visiting Runners
Tirana Marathon moved to 14-15 Nov 2026: fees from €10, bib tent by Skanderbeg Square, 09:00 starts, no refund if it moves again. Checked 23 Oct 2026.
The Tirana Marathon now takes place on 14-15 November 2026: a 5K on Saturday, then the 10K, half marathon and marathon on Sunday, every race starting at 09:00. Collect your bib and timing chip from the tent near Skanderbeg Square before race day or the regulations disqualify you automatically, and if the organiser moves the date again, your fee carries over but isn’t refunded. Land by Friday 13 November, early enough to reach the bib tent before it closes at 20:00, and keep your flight and room changeable.
The race facts below come from the organiser’s home page, its regulations page and the EasyPay ticket shop, all read on 23 October 2026. The organiser’s own pages contradict each other in two places, the bib-tent hours and the day of the 2.3 km We Too race, and we set out both versions of each.
What moved, and what your entry is worth now
The tenth edition was set for the weekend of 24-25 October: an archived copy of the organiser’s home page from 16 October shows the 5K on Saturday 24 October and the longer races on Sunday 25 October. A notice on the page now postpones everything to 14-15 November. The notice says every ticket transfers to the new dates automatically, that registration stays open, and that runner kits are kept and handed out two days before the race. It gives the reason in its own words: “given recent developments in the country”, it says, it can’t guarantee the safety standards a race this size needs. It adds no detail. The Albanian news site Balkanweb ran the notice under a headline that opens “Protests in Tirana”, and the UK FCDO’s advice for Albania says political demonstrations have been held in central Tirana, some with reported violence. Before you book, read your government’s current travel advice for Albania, such as the UK FCDO and US State Department pages; our Albania safety guide explains how they differ.
Now read that against Article 3 of the regulations, which deals with a postponed event. If force majeure makes the event impossible to hold, the organiser reserves the right to change the date, time and venue, and “the registration fee remains valid as is and is non-refundable”. A second change is therefore possible, and your money isn’t coming back if you can’t make the new weekend. Book flights you can alter, and a room with free cancellation until the final week.
One more shift: the home page lists the last three editions as 22 October 2023, 20 October 2024 and 19 October 2025. This one lands three to four weeks later than the last three editions, so anything booked for the October weekend, flights and hotels included, is yours to move.
Races, fees and who can run
| Race | Day and start | Fee | Who can enter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marathon, 42.195 km | Sunday 15 November, 09:00 | €25 (about US$28 / £21) | 18 or older on race day |
| Half marathon, 21.0975 km | Sunday 15 November, 09:00 | €20 (about US$22 / £17) | 18 or older on race day |
| Tirana 10K | Sunday 15 November, 09:00 | €15 (about US$17 / £13) | 18 or older on race day |
| 5K City Run | Saturday 14 November, 09:00 | €10 (about US$11 / £8) | No age limit |
Those are the fees on the EasyPay ticket page on 23 October 2026, for an entry without a shirt. Add the optional shirt at €15 and the page shows €40, €35, €30 and €25. You pay by card in lek or euros; the page also offers cash at EasyPay shops, which only helps once you’re in Albania. Dollar and pound figures use the European Central Bank’s rates of 23 October 2026.
The 5K is the race for teenagers and young children, because the three longer distances need you to be 18 on the day. Article 3 also asks for a photo of a parent’s or guardian’s ID card and a consent form they have signed when a young runner registers; its wording (“18-year-old competitors”) is unclear, so ask the organiser what a child’s entry needs. Every finisher gets a medal (Article 7), and the regulations close the race six hours after the scheduled start, which means 15:00 for the Sunday races. Over the marathon distance, that works out at about 8:32 per kilometre (13:44 per mile).
The ticket page also lists free registration for Albanian students with a student card and for Albanian citizens over 62 (women) or 65 (men). An older notice that everyone over 65 runs free is still in the page, but it no longer appears when you enter a birth date, so a foreign runner over 65 should expect to pay unless the organiser says otherwise. And the regulations put health risks on the runner (Article 4), so check that your travel insurance covers road racing; our Albania travel insurance guide explains what a policy should include.
Bib pickup: two windows, one safe plan
Here the organiser’s pages disagree. Article 6 of the regulations says bibs and timing chips are collected on 12, 13 and 14 November, from 09:00 to 20:00, at a service tent near Skanderbeg Square, and that anyone who doesn’t collect on those dates is disqualified automatically. The Marathon Week agenda on the home page lists something else: check-in from 13:00 to midnight Monday to Friday, 09:00 to midnight on Saturday, none on Sunday.
| Source | Days | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Regulations, Article 6 | 12, 13 and 14 November | 09:00-20:00, tent near Skanderbeg Square |
| Marathon Week agenda | 9-13 November, then 14 November | 13:00-00:00, then 09:00-00:00; none on Sunday |
The archived October version of the page carries the same agenda, weekday for weekday, with only the dates changed, which suggests it was copied across when the race moved. That’s our reading, not the organiser’s statement. The agenda also says pickup “closes Nov 14 at 00:00”, which could mean the end of Friday 13th. The safe plan is to stay inside both versions and before that cut-off: collect between 13:00 and 20:00 on Thursday 12 or Friday 13 November. Saturday, 09:00 to 20:00, is the fallback for Sunday runners only.
The 5K starts at 09:00 on Saturday, the moment the tent opens that day, so its runners need a bib by Friday. Sunday runners can still collect on Saturday, but a flight that lands that evening leaves no margin: the regulations shut the tent at 20:00, and a late landing means no bib. The organiser doesn’t say what to show at the tent, so carry your confirmation email and your passport.
From Tirana airport to the square
Most runners from outside the Balkans will land at Tirana International Airport (TIA). Wizz Air, the race’s title sponsor, has a base in Tirana and flies there from many European cities; routes change by season, so check its live route map for your city. Coming from further away, work backwards from the bib tent and aim to land on Thursday, or by early afternoon on Friday. Entry rules depend on your passport, and our Albania visa guide has them.
The airport bus parks behind the Opera and Ballet theatre on Skanderbeg Square, the square the bib tent stands near, so one bus gets you from the plane to the bib queue. Fares, frequency and the taxi range are in our airport transfers guide. A pre-booked transfer with a driver at arrivals makes sense when you land late with a race bag, or when several runners split one car. Keep your race shoes and kit in your hand luggage: bags go astray, and 15 November is a poor day to break in new shoes.
Where to sleep so you can walk to the start
The ticket page names Skanderbeg Square as the venue. The organiser describes the 5K as running through streets closed to traffic for the morning, and on 23 October 2026 its route page showed a course map for each distance but no list of closed streets. Don’t count on a taxi reaching the start line. Sleep somewhere you can walk from.
That’s easy in Tirana. Our where-to-stay guide puts the triangle of Skanderbeg Square, Blloku and Pazari i Ri at about 15 minutes on foot across. A room around the square puts you at the tent and the start in minutes. Pazari i Ri, the food quarter, is roughly 10 minutes from the square. Blloku, a similar stroll the other way, is the bar-and-cafe district: good for a pasta dinner, loud for sleeping, so ask for a room away from the bars before a 09:00 start.
A cool start and a mild afternoon
Mid-November in Tirana is cool and unsettled. We averaged the ERA5 reanalysis (the weather model dataset behind the Open-Meteo archive) for a grid cell over Tirana on 14 and 15 November of 2015 to 2025. Temperature at 09:00 averaged 11 °C (52 °F), with single mornings between 7 and 17 °C, and it climbed to about 17-18 °C (63-64 °F) between noon and 15:00. On 8 of those 22 days there was measurable rain in at least one hour between 09:00 and 15:00.
That’s a single reanalysis cell rather than a weather station, so it shows the usual pattern and can’t stand in for a forecast. The regulations say the event takes place in all weather, with the right to interrupt it for imminent danger such as extreme heat or severe weather. For running, 11 °C at the start is close to ideal, so dress for the race rather than the wait: an old top you can throw off before the start, a rain shell for the walk there, and a final check of the forecast the week you fly. The regulations put water stations about every 2 km along the course, and on an average day marathoners who finish after 13:00 run their last hours at about 17-18 °C, so don’t skip the early ones.
The days around the race
The organiser calls 9-15 November Marathon Week. On 23 October 2026 its agenda named three events: a masterclass with a DJ set on Tuesday 10 November, a Traditional Albanian Night on Thursday 12 and an electronic party on Friday 13. Monday and Wednesday were marked “to be confirmed”, and the agenda gives titles, not venues. The October version of the page listed the same titles on the same weekdays, so confirm each one before you build a plan around it. Treat the week as optional and plan everything else around your tent visit.
Your free hours are easy to fill, because the centre is compact. Our Tirana city guide covers the Pyramid, Bunk’Art and the Dajti Ekspres cable car, and Skanderbeg Square itself is worth an hour on the day you collect your bib. A guided walk fills the gap between collecting your bib and dinner, and a short one keeps your legs fresh for Sunday. For a folk evening, our Albanian Folk Night guide prices the show on its own and with dinner; take the show-only version the night before a 09:00 start.
Ask the organiser before you book
Four questions the organiser’s pages leave open can all go to info@tiranamarathon.com, the address it prints on its route page:
- Which bib window is right, the regulations’ or the agenda’s, and what to show at the tent.
- Whether your entry can pass to another runner if you can’t make 14-15 November.
- Whether free entry for people over 65 covers foreign runners.
- Which day the 2.3 km We Too runs. The agenda puts it on Saturday with the 5K, the regulations on Sunday, and the ticket page ties it to special-needs registrations with no payment.
The route maps are the other thing to check. Article 3 says the routes are shown on stands and online, and the route page already has a map for each distance, but the four it embeds from a mapping site were saved in August 2022 (the marathon one is labelled “Tirana Marathon 2022”), so ask whether they show this year’s course. The other dates of Albania’s late autumn, from flag days to the song contest in December, are in our events calendar. So build the trip around Friday 13 November: on the ground by early afternoon, at the tent between 13:00 and 20:00, and race morning is a walk to the square.
